this is a so-called fiscal cliff. january 1st. our news makers representative jim clyburn of south carolina, number three democrat in the house of representatives and number one i'm sure to a lot of people. hello. how are you? >> hey, don. thank you so much for having me. >> thanks for coming on. is speaker boehner right, though? as the clock is ticking, ticking toward january 1st, the talks haven't progressed in two weeks. is he right? >> well, i don't know that i'm as disappointed as the speaker is right now. i understand some of his problem with this. but the fact of the matter is the american people ended elections on november 6th, voiced their approval of president obama's approach to this. over 3 million more people voted for him than voted for mr. romney. and then if you look at house democr democrats. only 201 of us got eelected. that means the rest were republicans. >> i understand that. >> but over 500,000 more votes than they got -- >> with all due respect, representative, we understand that the president won and you fe

fiscal cliff still hanging over us. markets, at least, are telling us that we think washington will get its act together, avert the fiscal cliff and like what they see from the jobs report this morning. >> my goodness. that's optimism there. can you talk to me a little more about this job market shrinking and that maybe why the unemployment rate dropped? >> two surveys that the government takes, household survey where they call thos thousands of people at home and ask, are you working? that's the number that gives us the unemployment rate. they also talked to thousands and thousands of companies and they say how many jobs do you have? how many jobs have you added? that's how you get that net job creation number up 146,000. when the government calls people up and they say i'm not working or i've dropped out of the labor market or whatever, you can see just how big the labor market is. we know that there are some, i think, 300,000 some people who have dropped out of the labor market. they've either dropped out. they could

jim was talking about a lot of specifics here, and we talk about the fiscal cliff. in some ways this is really a lot about symbolism and more for us, i think, than the two of them. can you describe what you think it means? >> sure. well, let me start by just saying across the street from where i'm at at rice, george herbert walker bush has been in the hospital, and we wish him a speedy recovery from his illness. it's an example of how you can form a friendship at these meetings. bill clinton had beat the sitting president, george herber walker bush, and they met similar to the way romney and obama are now, and now clinton and 41 are dear, close friends and have done many constructive things together around the world. i think, by and large, these meetings, the luncheon today, will be about optics. it's the photo ops. it's a chance to say america is united. there may be an opportunity here for mitt romney to come out and talk about the fiscal cliff or saying we must avoid falling off it towards something that could be helpful to the white house in the end. i remember
